Once the area and finished layer depth are known, the geometry is straightforward. A 50 m² area covered with 10 cm of topsoil uses 50 × 0.10 = 5.00 m³ before any separate ordering allowance. Because one cubic metre contains 1,000 litres, the same base requirement is 5,000 litres.
The calculator keeps the base volume visible before adding any allowance. That matters because the geometric requirement and the amount you choose to order are different decisions. You can therefore compare the measured job with supplier packaging without losing track of the original volume.
Calculate only the footprint that will receive topsoil.
For a rectangle, length multiplied by width gives square metres. For a circular patch, the calculator uses π × radius² from the diameter you enter. If you have already measured an irregular lawn, bed or border, switch to known-area mode and enter the final square metres directly.
For an awkward site, split the footprint into simpler sections, calculate each area and add them together. Exclude patios, paths, structures, established beds or other surfaces that will not receive the new topsoil layer. Small area errors can become large volume errors when the chosen depth is substantial.
The calculator does not invent a topsoil depth for your project.
Different jobs can require very different finished layers. Levelling a shallow area, topdressing an established surface, preparing a new lawn, replacing poor soil or filling a deep planting area are not the same project. The depth should therefore come from the real specification, supplier guidance, contractor plan or horticultural decision you are following.
Enter that finished depth in centimetres. Tiny Mustard Seed converts it to metres internally before multiplying by area. Keeping the entered depth visible prevents a generic website preset from silently turning into a material order.
Convert volume using the litres stated by the supplier.
Retail topsoil and larger bags are not all packaged to one universal volume. Enter the litres stated for the actual product you intend to buy. The calculator divides the order litres by that bag volume and rounds upward to the next whole bag so the entered target is covered.
The leftover result is simply the difference between the litres contained in the rounded whole bags and the calculated order volume. It is not an instruction to spread excess material where it is not needed. When comparing products, change the bag volume and optional price to see how package size affects the number of units and project cost.
Tonnes require a real density for the actual material.
Topsoil is ordered by both volume and weight, but the two are not interchangeable without density. Moisture, organic matter, sand, clay and compaction all change how much a cubic metre weighs. That is why this tool always calculates cubic metres and litres, but leaves tonnes blank unless you enter a supplier or specification density.
If the supplier states a bulk density in tonnes per cubic metre, enter that value and the calculator multiplies it by the order volume. This creates a transparent material-specific estimate instead of pretending one generic tonnes-per-cubic-metre number fits every topsoil.
Add only the extra percentage your job actually needs.
The allowance starts at zero. If your project needs extra material for uneven levels, unavoidable handling loss, expected settlement or a deliberate contingency, enter that percentage explicitly. The calculator applies it after the base geometric volume so you can always see how much extra volume the allowance created.
This is more transparent than building a fixed 10% or 15% waste factor into every answer. A carefully measured small job may need little or no extra, while a rough site may need more. The appropriate allowance is a project decision, not a universal constant.

Keeping those calculations separate prevents one assumption from contaminating the next. A thicker soil layer does not automatically mean a higher grass-seed rate, and buying a larger fertilizer bag does not justify changing the label application rate.
How do I calculate how much topsoil I need?
Multiply the area in square metres by the required finished topsoil depth in metres. The result is cubic metres. Multiply cubic metres by 1,000 for litres. This calculator performs those conversions and can also round up to whole supplier bags.
Should I calculate topsoil from bag weight or bag volume?
Use the stated bag volume when converting cubic metres or litres to bags. Soil weight varies with moisture and composition. Use weight only when the supplier gives a density or other conversion for the actual product.
Why is the tonnes result optional?
There is no universal topsoil density. The calculator only shows tonnes after you enter a supplier or specification density in tonnes per cubic metre, keeping the conversion tied to the material you plan to order.
What does the ordering allowance do?
It adds the percentage you choose after the geometric base volume is calculated. The calculator starts at zero percent so settlement, waste or levelling allowances are never hidden inside the result.
Can I use this calculator for a lawn?
Yes. Use the measured lawn area and the finished topsoil depth required by your project or specification. The calculator handles the quantity; it does not decide what depth your particular lawn project should use.
