The quantity calculation is simple once the lawn area and the correct label rate are known. If the package states grams per square metre, multiply that rate by the lawn area and divide by 1,000 to convert grams to kilograms. A 50 m² lawn at a label rate of 30 g/m² therefore uses 1.50 kg of product for one application.
If the package uses kilograms per 100 m², the calculator converts that format automatically. A label rate of 3 kg/100 m² is equivalent to 30 g/m². Supporting both formats means you can copy the package instruction directly instead of doing a separate conversion first.
The calculator performs quantity math; it does not prescribe a feeding rate.
Lawn fertilizers differ in nutrient analysis, formulation, granule size, release pattern, intended season and manufacturer instructions. A spreading rate that belongs to one product should not be copied onto another simply because both are sold as lawn fertilizer. The package rate is the specific input this tool expects.
That separation is important for both accuracy and safety. Increasing the product rate because a lawn looks pale, because another website uses a larger number or because a bag contains extra product can lead to a result that no longer matches the manufacturer's instructions. Tiny Mustard Seed therefore starts with a user-entered label rate and keeps the purchasing result separate from the application instruction.
Use only the square metres that will actually be treated.
For a rectangular lawn, length multiplied by width gives the area. The calculator can do that directly. If you already know the square metres, switch to known-area mode. Irregular lawns are easier to handle by dividing them into measurable sections, calculating each section separately and adding the areas together.
Exclude patios, borders, paths, sheds, ponds and other surfaces that will not receive fertilizer. A measurement error affects every later number because the same area is used to calculate product per application, total product and the optional declared-nitrogen result.
Read the first NPK number as a product percentage, not a target.
If a fertilizer label includes an NPK analysis, the first number is the declared nitrogen percentage of the product. Entering that value lets the calculator show the amount of declared nitrogen represented by the product rate you already entered. For example, a 30 g/m² fertilizer rate with 15% N contains 4.5 g of declared nitrogen per square metre in that application.
This field is intentionally optional because the calculator does not need nutrient percentages to work out how many kilograms or bags to buy. The nitrogen result is best used to understand and compare labels. It does not determine whether a lawn needs nitrogen, whether the chosen product is suitable or how many applications should be made.
Use the application count for purchasing only.
If you already have a feeding schedule that follows the product instructions, the calculator can multiply the per-application quantity by the number of planned applications. This is useful when buying enough product for a season or comparing package sizes. It is not a scheduling engine.
Do not use the number-of-applications field to create a feeding programme from scratch. Timing can depend on the product, grass type, growth, weather, watering, mowing, local restrictions and other conditions. If the label limits frequency or total use, that limitation takes priority over any purchasing calculation shown here.
Compare the real packages sold by the supplier.
Enter the bag weight printed on the package and Tiny Mustard Seed rounds the total product requirement upward to whole bags. If you also enter the price per bag, the calculator estimates the purchase cost from that rounded quantity. The leftover figure shows how much product remains after the calculated applications are supplied.
This makes it easier to compare two bag sizes without confusing purchase efficiency with application rate. A larger bag might have a lower price per kilogram but leave more unused product. A smaller package might cost more per kilogram yet match the project more closely. The correct comparison depends on whether the products are otherwise suitable for the same lawn and intended use.
Quantity is only one part of a lawn-care decision.
This tool does not assess soil nutrient status, identify turf problems, choose an NPK formulation, set spreader calibration, decide whether fertilizer should be watered in or determine whether weather conditions are appropriate. Those questions depend on the actual product, lawn and local conditions.
Use the calculator when the job is already defined and you need accurate quantity and purchasing math. How much lawn fertilizer do I need?
Multiply the lawn area by the application rate printed on the fertilizer label. This calculator converts that result into kilograms and whole bags. It deliberately does not invent a universal lawn-feeding rate.
Can I enter kilograms per 100 square metres?
Yes. The calculator accepts either grams per square metre or kilograms per 100 square metres and converts both to the same internal rate before calculating the product quantity.
What does the N percentage field do?
If the fertilizer label declares a nitrogen percentage, the calculator can show how many grams of declared nitrogen per square metre are represented by the entered product rate. It is an analysis of the label rate, not a nitrogen recommendation.
Why does the calculator ask for the number of applications?
That field is for purchasing math only. Enter only the number of applications you already plan to make in accordance with the product label and your lawn plan. The calculator does not decide the timing or frequency for you.
Should leftover fertilizer be spread on the lawn?
No. Leftover product appears because bags are sold in fixed sizes. Store unused fertilizer according to its label rather than increasing the application rate simply to empty a bag.
