Raised-bed mistakes often begin when different parts of a plan quietly use different dimensions. An outside frame measurement is not always the same as the internal soil footprint after board thickness, corner construction or liners are considered. Tiny Mustard Seed keeps the project dimensions together so a change can be carried through timber, soil and layout calculations rather than leaving an old number hidden in another step.
Before buying material, decide what the entered dimensions represent. If you are measuring an existing bed, measure the real usable interior when calculating soil and crop capacity. If you are designing a new frame from external dimensions, account for the construction method before treating the full width and length as planting area. The project helps coordinate calculations; the builder still decides which physical measurement is appropriate for the design.
The lumber step translates the proposed bed into board cuts, stock-board quantities, posts and offcut based on the inputs selected in the calculator. That is useful for comparing common board lengths and seeing where waste may occur before material is bought. The result is a planning cut list rather than a structural specification.
Real construction still depends on timber thickness, species, treatment, joint style, screw or bolt choice, corner bracing, intermediate supports, ground contact and the pressure exerted by wet soil. Long or tall beds may need additional reinforcement that a simple geometric cut list cannot infer. Use the project to organise dimensions and quantities, then apply appropriate construction practice for the material and bed size you are actually building.

Soil volume is the bed length multiplied by width and fill depth. In metric units, one cubic metre equals 1,000 litres, so the project can translate the geometric volume into litres and bag quantities. The correct fill depth is not necessarily the full wall height: an existing ground layer, drainage material, settled old mix or planned freeboard can change how much new material is required.
Bag counts should round upward because suppliers sell complete bags, while bulk suppliers often quote cubic metres. Loose organic mixes may settle after watering and decomposition, so the geometric result is best treated as the starting purchase volume rather than a guarantee that the finished surface will never drop. Avoid silently adding a universal settling factor; different products behave differently. If you want an extra allowance, make that choice consciously using the product and supplier information available to you.

Once the physical bed is defined, the project can move into plant layout. Spacing values help estimate how many plants could fit, but a capacity number is not the same as a good design. Plant habit, mature spread, support structures, shade, crop access, succession plans and companion planting can all justify leaving more room than a simple grid allows.
