Make the next garden decision with less guesswork.

Compost is often sold by the bag while beds are measured in metres. Enter area and target compost depth to convert the job into litres and a realistic bag count.

Area × depth gives cubic volume. This is converted to litres and rounded up to whole bags. Settling and uneven ground can increase the amount required, so allow a small margin on large jobs.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Put the result into a real garden situation.

Covering 10 m² with 5 cm of compost means 10 × 0.05 = 0.50 m³, or about 500 litres. If compost is sold in 50 L bags, that geometric volume equals ten bags before any allowance for settlement or uneven spreading.

Understand the answer, not just the number.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Applying 5 cm of compost across 10 m² requires about 500 litres. If compost is sold in 40-litre bags, that equals 12.5 bags mathematically, so the buying estimate rounds up to 13 bags.

A deep new raised bed and a seasonal surface dressing are different jobs. Do not assume a large depth is always desirable just because the calculator can compute it. Match the application depth to the purpose and the material being used.

Bulk compost may be sold in cubic metres rather than bags. One cubic metre equals 1,000 litres, so the same 500-litre example is 0.5 m³ before any allowance for settling or uneven ground.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Is compost depth the same as digging depth?

No. The input is the thickness of compost you plan to add across the surface area, whether you later incorporate it or leave it as a top dressing.

Why round bag quantities up?

Suppliers sell whole bags, and rounding down would leave the calculated volume short.
